A situation developing not necessarily to our advantage

Japan is a good friend of Australia and, most likely, a military ally in any trouble in which we get involved. What's not so clear is whether we should be thinking ourselves a good ally of Japan in any trouble in which it becomes involved, the more so at a time when a new Japanese self-confidence about its neighbourhood is a cause for concern, and when the neighbourhood is probably the most dangerous and risky anywhere in the world.
