Mr Solly announced he was leaving the station last month to move to Thailand.

Mr Clark, who has previously presented programs on ABC local radio and ABC TV, will begin at the station in January.

ABC local content manager Andrea Ho said Mr Clark had previously worked as a lawyer, ministerial staffer and senior journalist for The Sydney Morning Herald.

He has also been a regular commentator on television programs including Sunrise and Meet The Press.

“Philip Clark is an outstanding broadcaster and someone who has a knack for putting people at ease while conveying important issues,” Ms Ho said.

“We are fortunate to have him on board and he will be an integral part of our team.”

Born in Tasmania, he currently teaches a course in Media Law at the University of Technology, Sydney.

“Canberra was the first place I lived in after leaving home,” he said.

“I am a great fan of the city and have continued to visit regularly.”

"I can’t wait to start at 666. What I am most looking forward to is chatting with listeners about their region and what matters to them most.”

Mr Solly has presented the Canberra breakfast program for nine years and is moving to Thailand to accompany his wife, ABC political reporter Samantha Hawley, as she takes up a new posting as south-east Asia correspondent.

The announcement follows speculation that an internal appointment would be made for the program. Insiders suggested Drive presenter Adam Shirley could be in line for the prized breakfast time slot.
