Appearing in front of Magistrate Louise Taylor, Matthew Thomas Wootton, 47, was sentenced to an 18 month good behaviour bond, 100 hours of community service and a three month licence disqualification.

Wootton had pleaded guilty to a charge of negligent driving occasioning death.

In handing down her sentence, Ms Taylor acknowledged the "monumental impact" of the 37-year-old man's death on his three children, partner and extended family.

At an earlier appearance heartbreaking drawings by the man's two daughters had been supplied as victim impact statements.

The victim had been travelling along Southern Cross Drive in February on his Harley Davidson when Wootton pulled out in front of him in his Nissan SUV and caused the fatal collision.

The man had skidded for 15 metres and come away from his motorcycle before colliding with the front right wheel of Wootton's car.

Police estimated the motorcycle was travelling at 76km/h, within the sign posted 80, and uncovered no faults in the car or motorbike that could have caused the crash.

Neither the motorcyclist or Wootton were under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The court heard Wootton had been driving the short distance home after picking up his dog from a groomer.

Wootton arrived at the intersection of Ratcliffe Crescent and Southern Cross Drive and waited for one vehicle to pass before pulling out and colliding with the motorcycle.

He said at no time had he seen the motorcycle and believed it must have been obscured by the vehicle he had waited for.

Ms Taylor said Wootton had at no time tried to apportion blame to the victim nor did he deny his responsibility for the death of the man.

She said Wootton had spoken of how he often drives past the intersection and thinks of the victim.

The court heard Wootton had received counselling as he tried to live with the knowledge he had caused an accident that had taken a life.

Ms Taylor spoke of the victim's partner's anguish, particularly about the moment in his children's lives he will miss.

"The victim's family are left to live their lives under the cloud of his death," Ms Taylor said.

"The ache of their loss will never go away."

The victim's family sat in court, with his partner in tears as the sentencing took place.

Ms Taylor said it was important for the court to send a message that negligent driving, especially where harm comes to a person, will be met with punishment.

She said the safety of vulnerable road users, in this instance a motorcyclist, was reliant on other road users not making assumptions. She said in this case Wootton had made an assumption no other vehicles were present when he pulled into the road.

Wootton accepted his punishment and gave an undertaking to complete the 100 hours of community service.
