The awards, presented by Chief Minister Andrew Barr at a gala ceremony at Parliament House on Friday night, are designed to recognise individuals, organisations and businesses working to create a community that supports people with a disability.

Advocacy for Inclusion general manager Christina Ryan received the Lifetime Achievement in Inclusion award for her work advocating for people with disabilities in Canberra.

Actor, tutor and producer Cara Matthews was crowned Emerging Young Leader for her work with Rebus Theatre, an actors' company formed to raise awareness of social issues and promote equality for people living with disabilities.

The Green Shed won the Inclusion in Employment award. The organisation employs seven people with a moderate or severe intellectual disability and provides career pathways and promotes inclusiveness in the wider community.

The Excellence in Innovation Award was jointly awarded to Project Independence, an ACT government and community partnership to develop new models of home ownership for people with disability, and Canberra Community Housing, a community housing provider delivering models of housing tailored to the needs of people with a disability.

Mr Barr said all 12 award recipients had worked hard to create a more inclusive Canberra.

"The winners of [Friday's] awards show us what it takes to work towards a truly inclusive society and I congratulate each of them," he said.
