ACT Attorney-General Simon Corbell will announce on Wednesday the ACT Government has signed an agreement with Western Australia to purchase and use their courts' case management system.

The system, known as the Integrated Case Management System, will be rolled over the next two years, beginning with the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

ICMS will replace the outdated MAX database, which has been in operation since 1991, and is the first step towards the implementation of e-lodgement of court documents.

Mr Corbell said the agreement would improve the efficiency and timeliness of court and tribunal operations in the ACT, as well as substantially reducing the need for paper documents.

"The ICMS project will provide the ACT with the necessary capability to introduce further improvements to the way court and tribunal services are delivered and it is a necessary first step in moving toward a paperless court and tribunal system," Mr Corbell said.

"[ICMS] will provide the foundation for a range of initiatives aimed at improving service delivery across the ACT Law Courts and Tribunal.

"It will facilitate the collection of data about court operations and cases, providing a useful evidence base going forward."

Mr Corbell said the product would assist the ACT immediately, but also in the future as Western Australia further upgraded the system.

"For example, in the Perth Magistrates Court, a pilot program to operate entirely from electronic records is underway and the ICMS system is central to that work," he said.

Mr Corbell said work to introduce the new system in Canberra had already begun.

The full implementation of the system is expected to be finalised by December 2016.
