A spokeswoman confirmed the directorate was in talks with the ACT Council of Parents and Citizens Associations about the peak body's proposal "to explore the idea before determining next steps, if it is to proceed".

She said CCTV would be used only outside of school hours and the footage made available to ACT Policing if a site was vandalised.

"There are a small number of schools that experience vandalism and CCTV could assist deterring and reducing the instances of vandalism on our schools," the directorate spokeswoman said.

"Any act of vandalism has an impact on our school facilities, but can also interrupts learning. Because of this it's really important that we maintain buildings where our students love to learn and feel safe and engaged in their learning."

In a statement, the ACT Council of Parents and Citizens Association said school-based parent and friends groups had approached the peak body late last year requesting a trial of the technology as an extra security measure.

"Council expects to continue to work with the directorate, before the trial begins, on policies and procedures surrounding the trial, such as who has access to the footage and under what circumstances any footage can be accessed and used," the association's statement said.

"We also expect that consultation about the details of a trial would take place in any school community before the installation of cameras."

The Education Directorate spokeswoman said the procurement and maintenance of CCTV hardware would fall under the ACT government's existing CCTV strategy.
