Not so much for Steph Gorman, who will be voting for the first time on October 15.

Having missed the federal election due to being overseas on student exchange, the Belconnen resident, 21, is looking forward to the chance to have her say at the ballot box.

While much of the election debate has been surrounded by hospital funding and the future of the light rail, Ms Gorman said she has a very different set of election priorities.

"For me, it's about 100 per cent renewable energy by 2020," she said.

"Older people think that we don't care about investing in the environment, but the environment is an investment in young people because we'll be the ones who will be living here in the future."

The university student also singled out youth unemployment, job security and access to affordable housing among the big issues among young voters.

Unfortunately, she said, these issues are largely being ignored by both major parties in the lead up to election day.

"I'm interested in local politics because there could be some serious change in the community, but I don't feel like young people get heard," Ms Gorman said.

"Often these issues get drowned out by infrastructure and the economy, which young people also care about."

Data from the ACT Electoral Commission has shown more than 37,000 people between 18 and 25 will cast their ballot this election, making up 13.3 per cent of all voters.

The electorate of Brindabella has the most young voters in the ACT, making up 8008 of its more than 53,000 electors.

Youth Coalition of the ACT executive director Emma Robertson said many first-time voters feel "undervalued" by the electorate.

"While there are some young people who do feel valued, there is a notion from many that they're seen as a future, rather than a community, and ultimately they're just dismissed," she said.

According to Ms Robertson, many issues central to the youth vote were ignored in the lead-up to the federal election, and she hopes to see that change in the weeks to come leading up to the ACT vote.

"In terms of the federal election, discussions around mental health were not nearly as prominent as when we talk to young people," she said.

"If we were listening to young people not just in Canberra but around Australia, we would've seen marriage equality a long time ago. They're more socially conscious than we give them credit for."

With the election less than a month away, a survey of more than 2000 young people on key youth issues is set to be unveiled by the Youth Coalition this Thursday.

Its executive director said she hopes the survey will put candidates on notice as to the key priorities of what life is like in Canberra for young people.

While Ms Gorman is yet to decide her final vote, she said she hopes the final election result will make the Canberra community greater for younger people.

"Canberra is already vibrant for young people. I'm pretty resistant to others who think that it's boring," she said.
