Detainees at the Alexander Maconochie Centre have not received direct correspondence from parties or candidates ahead of Saturday's election, with pamphlets and posters instead provided by Elections ACT.

"Posters are in all accommodation areas and the education and library spaces," a Justice and Community Safety Directorate spokeswoman said.

"Detainees have been provided information about the upcoming election via detainee delegates meetings for the last two months.

"Emails have been sent to all detainees including reminders … Elections ACT also provided one-to-one advice during a visit to the centre on September 6."

Representatives from Elections ACT visited the prison on Tuesday to assist detainees in using an electronic polling station set up in the facility's visits area.

Unlike the federal election, where only prisoners serving a sentence of three years or less could have their say, all detainees were expected to vote.

An Elections ACT spokesman said the body did not keep a tally of the number of detainees on the electoral roll but that a recent visit to the prison garnered 34 new enrolments.

Sixteen people were enrolled with the Alexander Maconochie Centre as their home address, he said.

The Alexander Maconochie Centre held 428 prisoners as of Tuesday morning.
