Tuesday's party room meeting will present a crucial challenge for the Canberra Liberals as they attempt to rebuild after their election loss.

The opposition faces competing demands to refresh the leadership team, while maintaining its experience and avoiding the appearance of a lurch to conservatism.

Mr Hanson would not be drawn on Monday on whether he would stand in the spill, saying only that he was discussing the issue with his colleagues.

He has earlier stated he would do "whatever is best for the party", and agreed that his deputy, Alistair Coe, would at some point be the next leader.

But senior Liberal sources say Mr Hanson has been privately urged to stand again, even if it were to temporarily fill a leadership void while new members were tested and given experience in the Legislative Assembly.

Two separate sources said he should have the numbers to withstand a leadership challenge from Mr Coe, should the deputy decide to stand.

There are fears a split within the party would be highlighted if both Mr Hanson and Mr Coe stood for leadership.

One source said the exposure of such a rift would be "quite unfortunate for the party" in its next term, but that Mr Coe would only stand if he was sure he had the numbers.

He said there was no standout candidate for the leadership other than Mr Hanson, although new blood injected into the party would help in the longer-term.

"There is new blood in the party room thank goodness, and in due course that could provide them with options," he said.

"This arrangement [Hanson as leader] may not last for a full four-year parliament, and if it doesn't, in due course other names will come to the fore.

"That's not unprecedented, Kate Carnell was leader not much more than 12 months after she entered the Assembly. Jon Stanhope was [opposition] leader on his first day."

More conservative elements of the party are understood to be pushing Mr Coe and Shadow Industrial Relations Minister Andrew Wall as a leader-deputy ticket.

A second senior Liberal said that had spurred moderate Liberals to urge Mr Hanson to stand.

"A number of them have said to him … that he should consider standing because a Coe-Wall ticket was unacceptable, and that he should at least give them some breathing time to blood the new MLAs so that they can actually work out whether they're good or not," he said.

He said the numbers appeared to favour the moderates in the current Liberal caucus.

"This should not be a right-dominated party room like the last two terms have been. It's a question of whether the moderates or centrists can get organised," he said.

The party is expected to commit to a review of its election campaign, and a push is understood to be on for an external, independent reviewer to be brought in for the job.

The party room meeting is expected to take place on Tuesday morning at 9.30am.
