Speaker Vicki Dunne announced the appointment last week after changes to the Electoral Act in 2014 made the commissioner's role an independent officer of the Legislative Assembly.

Mr Green was first appointed in 1994 and on Tuesday will release proposed boundaries in the ACT electoral redistribution for next year's election. The commission oversees elections and boundaries, and provides electoral advice.

Mrs Dunne made the appointment on behalf of the assembly after the process commenced in late 2014.

She said Mr Green had served the territory "with distinction" and was responsible for an innovative approach to running of elections in the ACT.

"The Electoral Commissioner is independent of government as an officer of the assembly under the Electoral Act 1992 after amendments that were made to the act last year," Mrs Dunne said.

"This is the first time the Speaker has overseen the recruitment and appointment process."

The commission is made up of Mr Green, chairman Roger Beale and part-time member Dawn Casey.

"The commission is currently managing the redistribution of electorate boundaries to usher in the assembly's new structure of five, five-member electorates," Mrs Dunne said.

"I am pleased that Mr Green will be able to continue that work, as well as to prepare the ACT for the next election, in October 2016."

Mr Green's new term will run until 2020.
