SHOUT board member Rebecca Davey said Disability Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith called her Tuesday night explaining the government had found "some buckets of funding" to help the not-for-profit stay open.

The money will be aimed at helping SHOUT transition to a self-sustaining model.

It is not yet known how much funding will be provided, though SHOUT had previously asked for $110,000 in the next financial year.

"The reality is we can't just depend on government any more for funding, the government doesn't have all that funding available, but we can look at other ways of making ourselves sustainable but also make sure that we can also still carry out the work in the community," Ms Davey said.

For more than 35 years SHOUT was funded by the now-defunct Disability ACT to provide low-cost infrastructure and administrative support to community organisations.

It announced it would close at the end of May over fears it would not qualify for funding under the NDIS and with no money forthcoming from the ACT government.

"We literally had money in the bank for the end of the financial year but because that involves having to pay out redundancies and wind everything up, that's much more expensive than just running," Ms Davey said.

The government's commitment was "a big relief", said Ms Davey, who paid tribute to efforts from Canberra Liberals disability spokeswoman Elizabeth Lee, patron and former chief minister Jon Stanhope and The Canberra Times for their efforts in keeping SHOUT open.

"Our first step is we're going to go out there and we're going to do some cost-benefit modelling on what we do, look at different models, look at the way other organisations have changed their models," Ms Davey said.

Ms Stephen-Smith told the Legislative Assembly details on the process were unavailable as discussions continued. The ACT Council of Social Service would work with SHOUT on reaching a new arrangement, she said.

"As I've been saying for well over a month now, Minister [Meegan] Fitzharris and I were already looking at and talking about alternative or additional sources of funding for SHOUT, recognising that they do support a range of community organisations, and this is the process we're currently working through," she said.

Ms Lee welcomed the announcement: "It took the combined effort of the devastated community organisations and unnecessary angst for a lot of Canberrans but the ACT government has finally accepted that funding for SHOUT is not only necessary but a responsibility for the ACT government.

"We are yet to hear all the details of this new promised transitional funding and we will not be giving up on this issue until the Canberra community can be reassured of the future of SHOUT."
