The ACT government will set aside the "modest" amount in next week's territory budget to fund community legal assistance, Attorney-General Simon Corbell said on Tuesday.

The additional territory funding will supplement the federal government's decision to restore $25.5 million over two years to legal aid commissions, community legal centres and Indigenous legal service providers across Australia, after the government backflipped on some of the cuts originally planned for the sector.

The extra ACT funding will enable legal aid to provide at least an extra 100 grants each year, from about 1900 to more than 2000, according to Mr Corbell.

"We know there has been a significant increase in demand for grants of legal assistance. This is a direct response from the ACT government to provide further grants of aid to legal aid so they can make those available to the most vulnerable Canberrans."

Mr Corbell said the ACT was better off than some other jurisdictions with Commonwealth funding remaining at current levels over the next two years.

He joined several of his state and territory counterparts to sign a letter last week calling on the federal government to reverse its budget decision to cut funding to the community legal sector from 2017-18.

In the ACT, the cuts will mean an estimated 30 per cent funding reduction for the ACT Women's Legal Centre and Canberra Community Centre, formerly the Welfare Rights and Legal Centre.

"The Commonwealth needs to step-up and make a long-term commitment to the community legal sector," he said.

Legal Aid ACT chief executive John Boersig said the extra money was "great news" and would benefit "many disadvantaged people in this community".

The small boost comes after a $800,000 federal government contract for frontline services in Canberra was cut in half despite the commonwealth government's March funding backflip.

Meanwhile, the rate at which Canberrans are accessing legal aid for domestic violence matters has almost doubled in the past three years, prompting the organisation to funnel more of its resources towards victim support.

The EDO's principal solicitor, Camilla Taylor, said the service was excluded from the Commonwealth's recent restoration of legal centre funding after the bulk of its funding was cut in 2013.

"Unless the lost federal funding is replaced, EDO ACT will be forced to close at the end of the year and the community will lose access to this specialised legal service," she said.

"We are very hopeful our budget submission to the ACT government, a Labor-Green coalition, will be successful."

The Women's Legal Centre executive director, Elena Rosenman, said most of the women the organisation assisted had experienced family and domestic violence and the Commonwealth budget foreshadowed dramatic cuts to the service which would threaten its ability to deliver crucial services to women in Canberra.

"If the Commonwealth government is serious about their commitment to support women leaving abusive relationships, they need to ensure community legal services like ours have adequate and secure funding," she said.

"The ACT government has always been supportive of the centre's work and we are hopeful next week's budget includes funding that will allow us to deepen this partnership."
