Territory and Municipal Services Minister Shane Rattenbury said nearly 2000 requests were being received each day for live bus data from the NXTBUS system, launched in July and plans for a smartphone application are under way.
The NXTBUS system allows users to track bus departure times for services, including on routes and individual stops.
Some bus services have seen an increase in passenger numbers after the introduction of paid parking in the parliamentary triangle this month, and new routes and timetables were introduced as part of the Network 14 plan on September 1.
A total of 8050 people used the new NXTBUS website last week and more than 4000 people received information about bus data via text message.
"NXTBUS makes finding out when the next bus departs from your chosen location easier," Mr Rattenbury said.
"Passengers can look up bus departure times by bus stop ID, route or location and get live results for the next 90 minutes, They can also see if the bus is wheelchair accessible and/or equipped with bike racks."
Mr Rattenbury said plans were underway for an additional subscription service for bus passengers, providing emails and text message alerts for individual routes and stops.
The government is currently seeking expressions of interest from application developers.
Improvements including 19 new display screens have been installed at bus stations throughoutCanberra, while more screens are planned for the Barton Bus Station on National Circuit in coming months.
A new ACTION Information Centre was also opened at the City Bus Station on Alinga Street, allowing passengers space to access the latest ACTION information, including timetables, news and service updates.
"The NXTBUS project is part of a suite of improvements to public transport," Mr Rattenbury said.
"Other improvements include the purchase of 77 new low emission and more comfortable buses, the dedicated bus lane in Canberra Avenue, as well as new Park and Ride and Bike and Ride facilities."
Information is accessible from computers, tablets and smartphones, from the ACTION website or at action.act.gov.au/NXTBUS.
