Safe Shelter at St Columba's Uniting Church, in Braddon, gave lodging to 84 homeless men during some of the city's coldest nights this year.

The shelter is run by more than 100 volunteers three nights a week from the end of April until the beginning of October.

Up to eight homeless men sleep under the care of several trained volunteers who also sleep on the floor.

The service does not require a referral – guests can simply walk in, as long as the volunteers are confident that the guest does not pose any health or safety concerns.

A preliminary report found that a greater number of homeless men used the shelter consistently this winter.

But growth in demand for the service is "disproportionate" to the service's availability, St Columba's Safe Shelter management committee chairwoman Alice Ferguson said.

"As soon as we opened up more nights a week last year the numbers soared up to 99 [guests]," she said.

The shelter opened in one night a week in 2013, providing swags and a dry place to sleep.

In the two years since, the numbers of people using the shelter have increased seven-fold.

"It's a mutual respect arrangement. There's no drugs, no alcohol, no violence. You can have a cup of tea, a cup of Milo or coffee, biscuits, you get a swag, it's a very simple service," Ms Ferguson said.

"One guy said 'it's not the Ritz' but it's dry and it's warm and it's carpeted and you can watch a bit of telly. We don't ask them what brought them to this."

She said another shelter is about to open in Queanbeyan and the committee is now working with a number of North Canberra churches which have expressed interest in providing their halls for use next year.
