The Australian Workers' Union will mount a challenge to the territory's imminent ban on greyhound racing with a motion at the ACT Labor conference next month.

However one of the two AWU delegates who will bring the motion forward is Kel Watt, the lobbyist engaged by the Canberra Greyhound Racing Club to fight the ban.

Mr Watt denied there was a conflict between his work for the greyhound racing industry and as a delegate bringing forward a motion that could save it, as he was "off the books" and the motion had "come up from the members".

"I'm there as a union delegate and I've been a member of the Labor party for 26 years," Mr Watt said.

"This motion hasn't come up through me, but through grassroots activism. You've got a 100 per cent unionised workforce out at the track. It's Labor policy in every jurisdiction for a well-regulated greyhound industry with animal welfare front and centre and I know there are Labor-voting members being thrown out of jobs against their will [because of the ban]."

The motion calls on the ACT government to scrap the section of the parliamentary agreement with the Greens that promises a transition to end greyhound racing in the ACT and reinstate funding to the industry.

It signals a split within the party about the impending ban, which came after an independent report found the ACT racing industry was unable to be divorced from the poor animal welfare record of Greyhound Racing NSW.

The AWU is aligned with the right faction of the Labor party but Mr Watts said his motion had the support of members of the left faction and the "rank and file members".

But ACT Labor secretary Matt Byrne dismissed talk of internal divisions on the issue.

He said said while he didn't speak on behalf of all members of the party, he believed most of the membership base supported the greyhound ban.

Mr Byrne also indicated the union had a small presence in the ACT.
