The winner, aged in his 60s but who did not wish to be named, said he had no idea he’d won the lottery until a NSW Lotteries official contacted him on Monday morning with the good news.
“Are you kidding me?” he said. “Blimey, I’ve cracked the big one.”
The man had walked past the Evatt Newsagency early on Monday morning and noticed a sign saying they’d sold the winning division one ticket in the Saturday Lotto.
“I thought at the time ‘wouldn’t that be nice’ but never considered it was me until they called,” he said.
The ACT man has not decided how he will spend his earnings but said he was relieved and excited to have won the prize.
“I know the prize money will remove some of my stress and I’ll take a much-needed holiday down the track,” he said.
The owner of the Evatt Newsagency said the winning ticket was the largest amount of money ever claimed at his store.
“We’re definitely very excited for the winner and many people in our store and community are delighted for him,” he said.
A NSW Lotteries spokeswoman said the Saturday Lotto’s estimated $4 million prize pool was split between six winners across Australia.
There were two winning entries in New South Wales, and one each in the ACT, Queensland, Victoria, and South Australia.
The winning numbers in Saturday Lotto draw 3429 were 37, 26, 45, 20, 1 and 13, with the supplementary numbers of 27 and 22.
