The Transport Workers Union says the vast majority of the ACT's frontline ambulance officers were significantly overpaid because of errors involving leave records.
Letters have been sent out to about 80 per cent of frontline staff asking them to pay back the money, with one asked to return $44,000.
Emergency Services Minister Simon Corbell told local radio this morning that he is looking into the issue.
Mr Corbell said the territory has an "obligation" to recover the money, but said it would be returned in the most "sensible way possible".
"Arrangements have already been put in place arrangements that will provide up to 26 weeks for people to repay," Mr Corbell said.
"But I am concerned that in some instances that will not be a reasonable amount of time," he said.
"And I also want to be satisfied that the amounts that have been calculated as outstanding are accurate, so I'll be looking further at both those issues."
