The amount is more than four times what the parties were paid after the 2012 election, thanks to the parties voting themselves a system of public funding that far outstrips other jurisdictions.

In 2012, political parties and candidates were paid $2 a vote. Now, they're paid $8 for each vote.

In 2012, Labor received 86,000 votes for which it was paid $172,000 in public funding. This year, it received 93,800 votes, for which it was given $750,500 in funding.

In 2012, the Liberals received 86,000 votes and $172,000 in funding, the same as Labor. This year, the party received 89,600 votes and $717,100 in public funding.

The Greens were given just $47,500 in 2012 for their 23,800 votes. But this year, the party's coffers have swelled considerably, earning $200,800 for their 25,100 votes.

The ACT pays much more than other jurisdictions, after Labor and Liberal combined in late 2014 to vote through the increase. At the time, the Greens' Shane Rattenbury was the lone voice opposing the $8 payment, which he described as wildly out of step with other jurisdictions.

The federal government pays $2.63 a vote. In Victoria, candidates are paid about $1.50 a vote, and in Western Australia about $1.90. Queensland candidates get up to about $2.90. NSW has a different reimbursement system. South Australia, the Northern Territory and Tasmania have no public funding for elections.

The payment of $8 a vote, which increases with the consumer price index, was introduced with little warning or explanation in 2014. Labor and Liberal agreed in an Assembly committee that increasing public funding would "prevent corruption or the perception of corruption through improper influence". Labor's then deputy leader, Simon Corbell, said it would "help to level the playing field between the various parties and individual candidates, thereby allowing more meaningful exposure of candidates' election platforms and better informing voters".

To get public funding, candidates must top 4 per cent of the primary vote. Other than Labor, the Liberals and the Greens, only the Sex Party and Independent Kim Huynh met the threshold this year. The Sex Party got $29,550, and Mr Huynh $18,900. He said in October he would give half the money to Canberra Community Care, and the rest to his student campaign team.

Acting Electoral Commissioner Ro Spence announced the payments on Wednesday, saying no candidate or party was obliged to accept public funding.

The parties have also reaped the benefits of a boost to "administrative funding".

Administrative funding, introduced in 2012, is paid per Assembly member, and with the big increase in the number of members this year the amount paid to each party will rise significantly. Labor and Liberal each received about $173,000 a year when they had eight members each, but now Labor will receive $259,000 a year and the Liberals $234,000 a year.

Mr Rattenbury also tried to cap the administrative funding in 2014, saying it was designed to help parties pay for an accountant to meet the disclosure and auditing rules of the Electoral Commission. There was no extra administration under the 25-member Assembly and the extra money was simply a windfall gain, he said. But his attempt to limit the funding was defeated by Labor and Liberal.
