New figures show ACT job advertisements on the internet jumped 4.9 per cent in April to 34.1 per cent for the year, making it the strongest jurisdiction in the country.

In the same time, total job ads nationwide fell 0.1 per cent but were still up 9.3 per cent during the year in seasonally adjusted terms, the Department of Employment said on Wednesday.

Canberra offered 4300 vacancies last month, the third-smallest number behind Tasmania and the Northern Territory, the April Vacancy Report revealed.

But the ACT was among only four states and territories to experience an increase in its vacancies during this period despite slight national decline.

The results come just over a week after Finance Minister Mathias Corman revealed public service positions faced more cuts as the federal government looked to abolish and merge more agencies in its second budget.

Ten government departments will face "functional reviews" targeting "waste and duplication", including reviews already under way at the departments of Health and Education.

Looking at occupation types nationally, positions for community and personal service workers recorded the biggest increase in the past year with 18.1 per cent, seasonally adjusted.

The only category of jobs to record a decline was labourers, down 2.2 per cent.

In the ACT, clerical and administration workers recorded the biggest yearly increase with 44.9 per cent more vacancies (718) than April 2014.

Labour jobs budged less than 1 per cent (0.3 per cent, 153 jobs) during the same period, while sales workers was the only category to drop the number of positions, by 0.5 per cent (251 jobs).

Management opportunities grew by more than a third with a 36.4 per increase during the past year (603), while professional job openings jumped 29.6 per cent with 1732 jobs on offer last month.
