As the internal disruptions in the Liberal Party create a distraction, Ms Gallagher could be making a low-key move on the frontbench as Opposition Leader Bill Shorten decides who will replace Jan McLucas and Bernie Ripoll who were stepping down.

Ms McLucas has been the opposition's spokeswoman on housing and homelessness and mental health.

Mr Ripoll has been Labor's representative for financial services, superannuation, sport and Mr Shorten's assistant for small business matters.

Asked on Wednesday morning whether she hoped to secure a frontbench position, former ACT chief minister Ms Gallagher said she was talking about the issue with colleagues.

"I am going to talk with colleagues about what opportunities may be there but that's about all I can say," she said.

"I am looking for how I can contribute to the team.

"I left the chief ministership to come into his position because I thought I could contribute to federal Labor's campaign against the Abbott government and in that regard nothing has changed so I do want to contribute but there are huge opportunities in this Senate to contribute in a variety of ways.

"I am certainly talking to colleagues but its early days."

It was clear last December when she signalled her move to federal politics that Ms Gallagher could use her credentials as Australia's longest serving health minister to take on some responsibility in the health sphere.

Meanwhile, ACT Liberal senator Zed Seselja sent a warning to Malcolm Turnbull when he said the party was "predominantly conservative" and needed to be reflected in the make up of the new ministry.

It comes as Mr Turnbull's ascendancy has the possibility to cause a deep division in the party between moderate Liberals and the conservatives.
