Canberrans who refuse to follow garbage laws are using sites in Belconnen more than other areas for their illegal dumping, the ACT government has outlined.

Announcing the installation of new roadside and dump-site signs calling for residents to dob in dumpers, Territory and Municipal Services Minister Meegan Fitzharris said six of the worst eight dumping spots were in the region.
Areas off the prominent William Slim Drive and several roads in Holt were among those highlighted, but the Monaro Highway to the south-east was not spared.
"This is an ongoing problem, which is not just unsightly but poses risks to the environment and our community's health," Ms Fitzharris said.
"Cleaning up after illegal dumpers is also a financial burden costing ratepayers around $200,000 each year."
Dumped waste included green waste, builder's rubble, prams, old toys, bicycles, suitcases, white goods, televisions, couches and tyres. Ms Fitzharris said rates of illegal dumping were "stable". Public land and isolated rural areas were often targeted.
The campaign has involved the installation of 10 new, "highly visible" signs at prominent sites across the ACT, including Pialligo Avenue, Monaro Highway and Barton Highway roadsides.
A number of smaller corflute signs would be erected at hot-spot dumping sites as part of the crackdown.
Ms Fitzharris also warned she would act if dumping around charity bins was not stopped.
"The ACT government will consider all options, including possibly removing charity bins from some locations when the contracts come up for renewal at the end of June," she said.
The campaign was part of an ACT and NSW cross-border agreement, with signage consistent with that installed in Queanbeyan, Yass, Cooma and Palerang.
Unwanted items and household waste can be taken to transfer stations in Mitchell and Mugga Lane, and there are free recycling drop-off centres around Canberra for residents who have already filled their bins at home.
Littering and illegal dumping can lead to fines of up to $15,000 for individuals and up to $75,000 for corporations, with penalties of up to five years' jail where dangerous substances are involved.
