Adroit navigation but no destination

Next month the Abbott government will move into its inheritance – the Senate chosen by the people to complement, moderate, and perhaps frustrate, the clear choice of the Coalition at the election nine months ago. It is at just that point of the election cycle where the daily talk is more about things that have happened since the election than about the circumstances in which voters were last being invited to make a choice. Most likely, whether Abbott, or the Coalition, are in government at the end of 2016 will depend on things it says or does over the next year, not its performance on its 2013 promises, or last-minute desperate offerings towards the end of the term.
