An elderly man found dead at an inner-north nursing home suffered facial injuries and did not die of natural causes, a post-mortem has found.
The 94-year-old dementia patient was found in his bed at the Jindalee Aged Care Residence on Saturday morning.
It is believed he died between 7am and 8am, after spending his first night in the Narrabundah facility.
In a statement issued late yesterday afternoon, ACT Policing said more pathology tests would be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
But the man appeared to have suffered facial injuries. ''[The post-mortem] has confirmed the death was not consistent with natural causes,'' police said.
Police believe a domestic disturbance occurred at the home on the morning in question, and are investigating whether the dispute contributed to the man's death.
The dead man was a patient in the facility's secure dementia ward.
The centre has since removed two patients from the same ward and transferred them to a secure hospital unit.
Police said they had no one in custody.
Investigators were still interviewing staff and patients yesterday, and police expect the process to be prolonged by the age and frailty of many of the residents at the home.
The man's family has been informed of the post-mortem results but his identity has not yet been publicly released.
It is, however, known he transferred to Jindalee from another Canberra nursing home on the Friday before his death.
The private facility is run by Johnson Village Services.
Earlier this week, managing director Gary Johnson said some staff had taken time off work.
''Our staff are hurting and they're traumatised, the residents are afraid and traumatised, and their families are very, very much on edge,'' Mr Johnson said.
