Black smoke emerging from an Ainslie flat Tuesday morning is the result of a smouldering mattress, according to emergency services.

Firefighters were called to the Ainslie Flats on Howe Crescent about 9.50am Tuesday after one person self-evacuated.
An Emergency Services Agency spokeswoman said three ACT Fire and Rescue pumpers were on scene. Firefighters investigated the area for smoke spread but did find any further damage.
Ventilation operations were underway as of 10.30am.
The cause of the fire was unknown at this stage, the spokeswoman said.
