The possible existence of two additional offending brothers at Marist College Canberra between 1980 and 1984 was disclosed in a list of compensation matters provided to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Abuse.

A Marist Brothers spokesman said the two brothers had been the subject of allegations that were independently investigated by the NSW Ombudsman.

“That independent investigation made two findings 'not sustained-false’ in relation to the two brothers who are not named,” he said.

“The document referred to is now part of the overall consideration of the royal commission into these matters, with which we have fully co-operated.”

Matter 080467, which carries the Catholic Church Insurance claim number 2701720, lists four brothers in the "accused" column. Two, Sutton and Chute, are named. The other two have had their names redacted.

The level of abuse is rated as "4 to 5" on a scale of one to five.

According to the list, the victim, who was aged nine when the abuse began, was apparently molested by four different adults over a four-year period. His settlement is quoted as “$80,000 inclusive”.

The spokesman said that, despite allegations that individual students were molested over three and four years by as many as five different individuals, “we are unaware of any credible evidence that would support the notion of collusion by perpetrators”.

The spokesman said: “Such evidence must be reported to the authorities and we implore anyone with such evidence to do so.”

Provincial Brother Jeffrey Crowe has previously denied allegations there was a paedophile ring operating at Marist College Canberra in the 1980s.

“The testimony of the other brothers in the community in that era is that there was not a hint of it,” he said. “As in any family, people trusted one another.”
