At about 12.51am, officers from Belconnen patrol attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle leaving the Belconnen Labor Club.

The vehicle sped away from police along Emu Bank and reached speeds up of to 80km/hr in a 40km/hr zone.

Police followed the vehicle until it pulled into a car park and the driver and his male passenger got out of the car.

The 25-year-old Queensland driver refused to undertake a breath screening test and was placed into police custody.

The man became aggressive and broke free of police, flinging his arm upward and striking the police officer’s face.

He then attempted to run from the scene but was apprehended soon after by police.

The man was taken to the Belconnen Police Station where he underwent a breath analysis and returned a blood alcohol concentration of 0.067.

He was conveyed to the ACT Watch House and charged with escaping custody, assault, resisting arrest, driving with blood alcohol in the breath and traffic offences.

The police officer received minor abrasions to the top of his head but did not require medical treatment.

The man received Watch House bail and will face the ACT Magistrates Court at a later date.
