Bradley Mark Flynn, 25, appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court on Thursday on charges of driving an unregistered car, unlawful possession of stolen property and not stopping a vehicle when signalled.

A police witness told the court further charges were expected to be laid against Flynn for his alleged his involvement in the theft of two cars from a yard in Fyshwick on Monday morning.

Flynn, of Charnwood, was released from jail late last year after serving three years for a northside bank heist and aiding and abetting an aggravated robbery.

The defendant who had vowed to go straight after his last stint told the court that he had stayed away from crime and fulfilled his parole obligations for the past six months.

But police allege he led them on a car chase and then robbed a Fyshwick car dealership over the past fortnight.

A damaged bumper and headlight first drew police attention back to Flynn on January 21, according to court documents.

Flynn allegedly led officers on a pursuit through Belconnen town centre when they tried to pull him over.

Flynn allegedly struck another vehicle, travelled on the wrong side of the road and drove through a busy intersection as he fled.

Police terminated the chase soon after.

Police arrested Flynn on Wednesday after he parked his car - which they allege had been fitted with stolen numberplates - in Lyons.

A police witness told the court that the two stolen vehicles were found near homes linked to Flynn.

Self-represented Flynn applied for bail and begged Magistrate Robert Cook to give him until Monday to sort out his family affairs.

The prosecution opposed the application on the grounds he posed a risk to public safety and could reoffend.

Flynn offered to abide by a curfew, report to police daily, and provide a $1000 surety – a sum he said constituted his life savings.

"I am trying to sort my life out. I'm gradually making progress," Flynn said.

Mr Cook told Flynn he believed his sincerity but the number of charges and ongoing police investigation meant the risk could not be mitigated by bail conditions.

The matter was listed to reappear in April.
