Christopher Roy Colgrave, 66, was arrested by police after the neighbours pinned him to a Calwell driveway about 4am in July.

Colgrave was on Tuesday ordered to face a December hearing in the ACT Magistrates Court on charges of possession of stolen property, assault, and going equipped for theft.

He has pleaded not guilty.

Court documents said a Calwell man was woken by the noise of the door of his Toyota Hilux closing on the morning of July 28.

He approached the car and called out "Who's there?" when he saw a light on inside the vehicle and the silhouette of a person moving around inside.

Colgrave allegedly emerged from the front passenger door, walked towards the man, and claimed he had been urinating.

The car owner asked Colgrave to stay put, as he wanted to call the police, but the accused allegedly then claimed he had a blackbelt in Judo, and tried to walk away.

The car owner had stopped his departure, and yelled to his wife to call the police, when Colgrave allegedly kicked him around the knees and thighs.

He then allegedly swung punches at the man with a closed fists and threatened to kill him.

But the car owner fought back.

He blocked the attack, punched Colgrave twice in the face, and then restrained him on the ground.

A neighbour arrived to hold Colgrave's legs and another held his arm behind his back.

Colgrave allegedly struggled, claimed he would have them charged with assault, and protested his innocence.

Court documents said the accused sustained no injuries that required hospital treatment.

A police search allegedly uncovered $76.45 in coins, two torches, work gloves, a flathead screwdriver, and hunting knife.

Court documents said the coins were believed to be stolen, while the other goods were alleged to assist with thefts.

About $10 worth of the coins were alleged to have been taken from the Calwell vehicle.

Colgrave allegedly gave police a false name, but fingerprint checks provided his true identity.

The accused was remanded in custody to appear at the hearing.
