Queanbeyan Fire Station commander Wayne Huggins told Fairfax Media the ammunition found at the depot near Ellerton Drive included rifle bullets and shotgun shells.
The hazardous material is being tested but authorities believe it is a liquid used in rabbit culling.
A Queanbeyan City Council spokesman said the items were found in a bush by council workers while they were out doing their job.
The workers brought the items back to the depot for disposal. They opened up the bag to discover the ammunition and poison and contacted the Queanbeyan Fire Station.
Queanbeyan Fire Station, ACT Hazmat, RFS, NSW Ambulance and police are at the scene .
More to come.
