The pair had been to the gym and were eating about 9.50pm on March 14 when three armed men, wearing balaclavas and wielding a firearm, kicked in the door.

Aaron leapt to his feet to confront two of the men, one of whom was armed with a machete, before he was knocked unconscious by the butt of the gun.

"It was quite shocking. There was no reason for them be there except to … hurt us or rob us. I thought we were going to be killed," he said.

"I didn't think people would come into a house armed with machetes and firearms to not use them. I thought they were going to use them on us.

"I thought we were in big trouble and I thought we were about to get hurt. I was quite scared. I was running pretty high on adrenaline."

The third offender attacked his partner, punching her in the face.

Aaron's next memory is of bleeding while kneeling on the floor on the phone to police.

The public servant was taken to hospital where doctors discovered the force of the blow had caused shocking head injuries, including a broken nose and jaw, a shattered cheek, teeth, and eye socket, and fractures down the side of his face.

The 31-year-old has since had a number of surgical procedures to repair the damage, including having metal plates inserted into his face.

He is scheduled to undergo further facial reconstruction surgery in the coming weeks.

Fortunately, his partner suffered only minor physical injuries.

Shockingly, police said the violent home invasion had been a case of mistaken identity.

Aaron joined police on Wednesday to renew calls for public help to solve the aggravated burglary.

Now, looking at the pictures of his injuries, Aaron said it scared him to think what could have possibly happened.

"No one would ever think that that would ever happen to them, especially in our complex, it's quite secure," he said.

"How they got to [our floor] is beyond us."

Officer in charge of the investigation, First Constable Lysa Barnsley, from ACT Policing's criminal investigations team, said police believed the offender's had meant to target a different apartment within the complex.

First Constable Barnsley said police thought the offenders had help in entering and exiting the complex.

"We believe this incident was drug related, however, I can strongly advise that Aaron and his partner are in no way involved in any drug related activity… it is a case of mistaken identity, [the offenders] wrongly targeted Aaron's apartment," she said.

"We know there are additional people … who have assisted these offenders. We are aware that some of these people might have given this assistance inadvertently, they may not have known the offence occurred.

"We are urging these people to come forward and speak to police."

Aaron said he had spoken out, despite the physical and psychological trauma, because he did not want others to suffer at the hands of the offenders.

"We want them to be caught … we're [now] strong enough to get here and ask for some help from the community so we can maybe catch these people.

"Anyone who thinks it's OK to go out and do these types of things is obviously not a good person and someone I don't want in the community.

"Please come forward, any information might be able help us get a bit of closure in what's happened; more importantly I don't think we want these people out there on the streets doing these things."

Police has previously released facefit images of men seen in the area at the time of the attack.
