Ms Rein, chief of a big employment agency and wife of former prime minister Kevin Rudd, said the potential for one graduate to do good was inspiring.
''Every year several thousand people start as undergraduate students at ANU and at universities around the country, and I reflect how one person can inspire a lot of people,'' she said.
''At ANU, there are a couple of thousand people starting out, and if they go out into the world and commit their life and energy, they can change the world.''
Huy Nguyen and Jamila Rizvi were named as young Alumnus of the Year, while New York-based Jue Wong took the award for International Alumnus.
