The property at 28 James Street attracted 15 registered bidders and about five of them bid.
The resort-style property was designed by architect Jeremy Mather three years ago and features an in-ground lap pool, an outdoor entertaining area with built-in pizza oven, a designer kitchen and a stunning wood and frameless glass staircase.
The home won The Canberra Times People’s Choice Award for Residential Architecture in the 2012 ACT Chapter Australian Institute of Architects Awards.
Peter Blackshaw auctioneer Peter Walker accepted an opening bid of $1.6 million before another 20 bids were placed.
The $1.925 million beat by $325,000 the previous record for the suburb, which was for a renovated property at 100 Dunstan Street sold in June 2010 for $1.6 million.
The James Street home was owned by Olympic rower turned real estate agent Brett Hayman, who won silver in the Sydney 2000 games as a member of the men’s eight. He became a full-time agent after the Sydney Olympics.
The Hayman family lived in the original home at 28 James Street for about a year before opting for a knock-down rebuild instead of a renovation.
The home has views across the Woden Valley to Parliament House and Black Mountain.
The auction attracted a crowd of about 200 people. Peter Blackshaw Woden and Weston Creek agent Martin Faux said about 400 people had been through the property during the auction campaign.
He said there had been strong interest and it would be hard to find another in the suburb that would compare with it. “I think it’s a fantastic result to break the record for the area,” Mr Faux said.
The sale was the standout result for the day. It was double the amount of auctions held compared with the past few weeks as the market began to ramp up for spring.
