Former Foreign Minister Gareth Evans will spend another two years as chancellor of the Australian National University to see out the bulk of the institution's strategic plan and Union Court redevelopment.

The ANU announced on Thursday that Professor Evans would stay until December 31, 2019, having already served eight years in the role.
"I have had no prouder honour in my career than, as chancellor, to chair [the ANU Council] of extraordinarily talented Australians, to work with a superb vice-chancellor and his executive team, and to have the opportunity to help set the future strategic direction of our nation's finest university," he said.
"The next two years will see key parts of the ANU strategic plan developed and delivered, and the opening of the fantastic new Union Court precinct at the heart of the university."
ANU vice-chancellor Brian Schmidt said Professor Evans had "set the benchmark for exceptional governance and leadership" since his appointment in 2009.
"He has brought energy and rigour to the role, and he shares my determination to build on our reputation as one of the finest universities in the world," Professor Schmidt said.
Professor Evans served from 1983 to 1996 as Labor's Attorney-General, Resources and Energy Minister, Transport and Communications Minister and Foreign Minister.
He was president of the Brussels-based International Crisis Group from 2000 to 2009.
