The pop-up is expected to open within six months and will aim to serve as a new precinct for food, drinks, shops and events.

BrodDogs and Mr Papa were announced part of the pop-up and The Burley Group of Walt and Burley fame will manage the village's bar.

It will also feature a new medium-size live music venue.

The pop-up will be active until early 2019 while stage one of the $220 million Union Court and University Avenue redevelopment takes place.

"Of course this is a place that's connected to the city so we're hoping that we're going to have a great time and the rest of the city's going to be able to join us," Professor Schmidt said from Union Court on Friday.

"We have one of the great universities here in Australia embedded right in the middle of the nation's capital.

"We don't want this just to be another expression of Canberra, we want it to be the expression of a great university which the community can come in and be part of."

The Union Court and University Avenue project will include new teaching and student buildings, a purpose-built events and theatre building, student accommodation, a swimming pool, gym, outdoor spaces and amphitheatre, bars, event pavilions, cafes, services, shops and underground parking.

"It's really going to be a new and interesting space and it's going to be a little different from the rest of Canberra because it's going to be in this university setting that we hope is active and dynamic with a bunch of 20-year-olds running around," Professor Schmidt said.

"It's a good time to be able to come in and experience our university life even if you're not still at university."
