The Braddon residence, which has long prided itself on being situated off campus, will be Union Court's largest building and sit near a new teaching building and culture and events hub.

Residents Committee president Victoria Xia said moving to Union Court was a "compromise" following negotiations with the ANU centred on Fenner's unique identity and culture.

Ms Xia said students were told a move was inevitable due to the cost of maintaining the existing Fenner Hall. Agreeing to move to Union Court meant residents could have input on the interior of the final building, she said.

"I think a core part of Fenner's identity will still be the fact we're not on Daley Road and we are a self-catered college, but as for other aspects, our current line that we're off campus, that we're so close to Dickson and Lonsdale Street, these are things that we're going to have to work on once we move," she said.

"I think it's disappointing that Fenner has to move on to campus, but hopefully this will be a new chapter in Fenner's future and the community can continue to thrive in its new location in a few years."

ANU chief operating officer Chris Grange said rent prices and the future of the existing Commonwealth-owned building were unknown.

"The poor condition of Fenner Hall and the cost of maintaining it was going to make [rent] just as expensive - no cheaper is probably a better expression - in order to maintain the facilities," he said.

"It's definitely historically been one of our cheaper residences and we're hoping to keep the cost of the new residence down as low as possible."

Further details of the Union Court and University Avenue redevelopment were revealed at a public meeting on Thursday.

The "revitalised" Union Court will boast seven new buildings and lead to a one-third increase in the teaching spaces available at the university.

Access to student services is expected to improve under the National Health Co-op with a reduction in counselling wait times and the likely addition of physiotherapy services.

The pop-up village set to replace existing Union Court services until its 2019 completion will have a soft launch July 3 and is expected to be fully operational July 11.

Temporary vendors include Subway, Zambrero, The Coffee Lab, Rosies, Vodafone, Red Brick Espresso, Taste of Tibet, La Empanada, Molo Live, Unicorner, Australia Post, Sushi Smith, STA, a bike shop and a pharmacy.

Opposition to the project has stemmed from the loss of the iconic ANU Bar and the popular The Gods Cafe and Bar.

Mr Grange said the new Union Court would be a "vibrant, well-populated, active space".

Demolitions will begin "more or less immediately", Mr Grange said, but questions remain around asbestos removal in existing buildings and the final cost of the development.
