The ACT Magistrates Court was told on Saturday police had apprehended two suspects but the remaining pair got away and their identities were still unknown.
A 33-year-old woman accused of the break-in appeared in court to apply for bail but was instead sent for a psychiatric evaluation because she told her lawyer she would hang herself if she was kept in custody.
ACT Policing said, at 11.20am on Friday, the residents of the house in Phillip were at home and heard a loud knock on the front door and someone demanding money. The occupants refused them entry and the four then allegedly tried to kick in the front door. The residents tried to secure the front door then ran into the back yard and through a back fence, then called police.
Police said when officers arrived there were four people still in the house who ran out the front door and were pursued on foot. Police said property belonging to the home owners was found strewn along the path of the pursuit.
The court heard Karlie-Joy Ardler, 33, had been charged with trespassing with the intent to commit theft in company. The court was told Ardler was from Wreck Bay and had been in the ACT for just two weeks and had been couch surfing during that time.
In support of her bail application, the court was told Ardler had come to the ACT to see Department of Community Services workers about getting into a drug rehabilitation program.
The court was told she had a history of self-harm and was extremely agitated. The magistrate ordered her be taken to a health facility for a clinical evaluation and returned to court as soon as practicable for a determination on bail.
Her co-accused, an 18-year-old man, did not apply for bail.
ACT Policing have appealed to the public to call Crime Stoppers if they have any information about the identities of the two suspects who are still at large. Crime Stoppers can be contacted on 1800 333 000.
