But Bradley Mark Flynn has pledged never to return to jail after serving the sentence.
Flynn pleaded guilty in the ACT Supreme Court to aggravated robbery, two counts of car theft and dealing in the proceeds of crime.
Flynn robbed the Commonwealth Bank at the Jamison Centre in April 2011. On entering the bank, the defendant pointed a revolver at two tellers and demanded they fill a green shopping bag with cash.
Flynn fled the scene in a stolen car with $9160, later abandoning the vehicle in Cook and switching to another car. But he was spotted by witnesses while dumping the getaway car and forensic tests recovered his palm print from its interior.
Flynn and his girlfriend, Coral Campbell, who has already been sentenced for aiding and abetting the robbery, used cash from the crime to buy a secondhand car in Fyshwick.
Officers swooped on two properties the next morning, arresting Flynn and seizing the car.
Chief Justice Terence Higgins sentenced Flynn to five years' jail, backdated to May 2011 to take into account time served. He set a non-parole period of three years.
Flynn thanked the judge and said: ''I'm not going back to jail; this is it.''
