The Barton Highway between Curran Drive and Gold Creek Road has proved the most lucrative stretch of road for the ACT Government in the last three years, generating nearly $4 million in traffic infringement fines.

A document released under Freedom of Information shows that of the nearly $25.5 million in total revenue from red light and speed cameras in the territory from 2010 to 2012, cameras on that section of the highway accounted for over 15 per cent. While it continues to be the biggest money spinner, the number of infringements recorded there has been reducing each year, with the 7408 infringements issued last year down nearly 30 per cent from 2010.
That echoes a slight downward trend in revenue across all cameras, with around $9 million raised in 2010, $8.3 million in 2011 and $8.1 million in 2012.
However, there were nearly 2000 more infringements recorded in 2012 than in 2011, indicating smaller fines on average or more drivers successfully contesting their fines.
The average revenue raised per infringement in 2010 and 2011 was just below $167 - with that being the standard fine for travelling 15 kilometres per hour or less over the speed limit - but in 2012, the average return was just $156.
The next biggest revenue raiser after the Gold Creek area has been at the intersection of Northbourne Avenue and Antill Street in Downer, with cameras there generating nearly $3 million since 2010.
Cameras at the corner of Hindmarsh Drive and Ball Street were next, with just over $2.5 million raised in the three years, closely followed by the Monaro Highway between Mugga Lane and Isabella Drive, which raised $2.45 million.
Together, the top four hot spots accounted for $11.85 million or 46 per cent of Territory revenue. The point to point cameras on Hindmarsh Drive caught 3285 speeding drivers in its first year generating $468,600 in revenue for 2012. A red light camera at the intersection of Hindmarsh Drive and Tuggeranong Parkway generated the least revenue, with just over $44,000 in three years.
