The introduction of Let Kids Be Kids targets "ugly" parents who abuse junior players or match officials, but some sporting clubs say the problem isn't a big one in the ACT.

Tuggeranong Vikings junior rugby president Andrew Henderson said he didn't believe the government needed to interfere, despite himself being assaulted when he asked a parent to stay behind the ropes at a match five years ago.

The parent refused and it got heated, with police eventually getting involved and the parent banned from attending junior matches for life.

"That's a rare case. There are incidences of it but I don't think it needs government interference," Mr Henderson said.

"I think we cover it well. The ACT junior rugby has taken steps in recent times, we've introduced ground marshals and individual field marshals."

Despite this,he said parents did need to refrain from using bad language and should remain positive at junior matches.

"We try to create a nice atmosphere for kids to enjoy their time and learn from our good example," Mr Henderson said.

The Let Kids Be Kids program points at research which shows negative and abusive behaviour can negatively impact kids and could lead them to drop out of sport entirely.

Gungahlin Jets junior AFL vice-president Terry Evans said an education program to remind parents about their behaviour was needed, but matches he saw were mostly without incident.

His experience as a ground marshal had seen him exchange quiet words with heated parents, which he said created a bad atmosphere for kids.

"[You say] 'Look mate, this is a kid's sport, we're not playing for sheep stations'. They normally go, 'Okay, you're right'," Mr Evans said.

Belconnen Cats junior AFL president Nathan Rickard said his club definitely encouraged kids to be kids and asked parents to enjoy the games without getting to involved, having witnessed flare ups himself.

"[You get] parents on the sideline either showing some angst about umpiring or other kids players," Mr Rickard said.

"The kids get confused: 'Are we getting hard done by here? Is that guy being unfair?'."

A spokesperson for Cricket ACT welcomed the introduction of the program and said it would help kids continue to enjoy the sport.

"Junior participation is paramount to keeping our game growing," the spokesperson said.
