In a development described as ''horrifying'', Australian women giving birth in private hospitals are routinely undergoing unnecessary medical interventions once used only as life-saving measures.
A study of nearly 700,000 women in NSW hospitals found those giving birth privately had a 20 per cent lower chance of delivering their first child through normal vaginal birth.
The study is published in the British Medical Journal's Open journal.
