The incident occurred about 9.50pm on Saturday at the Liquor Legends store in Hawker on Belconnen Way.
Police said a man entered the store and, with a syringe half-filled with what appeared to be blood, demanded an employee hand over cash.
The employee, fearing for his safety, complied with the offender's demands. The man then left in an unknown direction.

He was wearing a light-coloured shirt, khaki shorts and a black baseball cap with a flat peak. The lower half of his face was covered with a green shirt.
The offender is thought to be aged in his late teens to early 20s.
