Bonython was just one of many schools throughout Canberra which enjoyed a parade of students dressed as their favourite book character, but it had extra cause for celebration.

The new outdoor space, brightly decorated with a mural designed by 1-2 teacher Karen Wilson, is a chill-out zone on the midst of the playground.

There is a portable trolley of books, comfortable chairs, colourful mats and inspirational quotes painted on the walls including: "Today a reader, tomorrow a leader".

Kindergarten teacher Annie McAppion said it was a way to differentiate the outdoor space and give students more options of how to use their time.

It was given the thumbs-up by students including year six student Nathanael Barons, 10, who came dressed as Roald Dahl's Fantastic Mr Fox.

"It feels nice because we're out in nature," he said, of the new space.

Year six student Adriane Stergiou, 11, dressed as Katness Everdeen from The Hunger Games, agreed.

"It looks amazing," she said.

Both were big fans of reading.

"It's like going into another world," Nathanael said.

Education Minister Shane Rattenbury officially opened the new outdoor learning space.

"Not all students want to run around at lunch time, sometimes students want to sit quietly and read or swap stories. This space provides that opportunity while still enjoying the sunshine and socialisation with their peers," he said.

"This is a great example of an inclusive and flexible space for students, which relates to one of the recommendations from the Schools for All program."
