Canberra District Rugby League Football Club Ltd, the club's parent company, confirmed the Braddon venue would close its doors permanently next Thursday.

Company director Simon Hawkins said the 30-year-old club would be closed for financial reasons before the ACT government's decision on the plans lodged for a $80 million redevelopment of the site.

''The days of small clubs are numbered,'' he said.

''This one hasn't been profitable since we took it over in 2005.''

Mr Hawkins said all the poker machines from the club would be moved to the Gungahlin Raiders Club by next Thursday.

Staff had begun moving the 46 machines in the past month.

Amendments to the Gaming Machine Act (2004) that came into effect in January allow clubs to transfer poker machines between their venues.

The move will give the Gungahlin Raiders Club 188 machines. Mr Hawkins said the northside club was thriving in comparison with the smaller Braddon venue.

The director said the company was awaiting approval from the ACT Planning and Land Authority over the development application lodged earlier this year.

The $80 million development includes demolition of the Braddon Club and construction of shops, restaurants, offices and 160 apartments. The development hinges on a separate application to de-concessionalise the lease that the company holds for the site.

The current lease for the land, at the junction of Donaldson, Cooyong and Torrens streets, stipulates it must be used for a community club.

Approval would give the group full control of the land and allow the redevelopment to proceed when the plans are given the green light by the ACT planning authorities.

''It's really in the hands of the bureaucrats,'' Mr Hawkins said.

An ACT Planning and Land Authority spokeswoman said the government was still considering the application for the redevelopment of the site.
