Braddon Forum director Peter Conway has called on the ACT government to consider upgrading off-street parking near Mort , Lonsdale and Henty streets, after it finalises recently announced upgrades to lighting and footpaths inside the park.

This month's ACT budget included $1.5 million for the work, and for new barbecues , tree plantings and improvements to streetscapes in the busy nearby Mort and Lonsdale streets precincts.

Mr Conway has raised the proposal for two-level off-street parking with ACT government directorate officials and said it was needed as further expansion of paid parking in the city is planned from September.

The forum proposes parking half a floor below ground level and half a floor above ground, as the most cost-effective way to increase available spaces without loss of parkland. Residents in nearby houses and apartment buildings should also be issued with local parking permits.

"At some stage, the government is going to have to address the lack of parking in the Braddon area, with the way the residential are proceeding.

"You wouldn't go a full storey underground as that would cost something like $20,000 a park. Half a storey down would see the cost down to about $12,000 a spot and about $8000 above ground."

Mr Conway said the plan would provide more than 100 additional car parks.

"They've agreed to take it on notice, bearing in mind we don't want to distract from the heritage value of the park. At some stage car parking will need to be improved and now there's paid parking, I can't see why you wouldn't pay it off in four or five years.

"More importantly you're taking pressure off Lonsdale and Mort Street," Mr Conway said.

Members of the forum, including local traders, have welcomed ACT 2015-16 budget funding for the park improvements, set to benefit Canberra's inner north.

"The trees have been slowly dying because of their age," Mr Conway said. "They must be nearing the 100-year mark given the age of the park," he said.

"We are still continuing negotiations with the government on the establishment of some rotunda-style facilities in the park for weddings and other similar events to take place."

Roads and Parking Minister Mick Gentleman said he welcomed discussions on the proposal, now in the early stages. If formalised, it would be considered by the government's

In August 2014, members of the forum asked the government to use the Anzac centenary to consider changing the park's name, which recognises supreme commander of British and imperial forces in World War I, Field Marshal Douglas Haig.

The long-running debate stems from criticism of Haig's performance during the war, including the way he and his generals oversaw British and Australian troops in battle.

Mr Conway said the name change, as well as changes to historical information around the park, was being considered slowly by the territory, the federal government and the Australian War Memorial.

"What the forum is suggesting is just telling the story as it was, what his contribution was and our relationship with England at the time. That's an ongoing question," Mr Conway said.
