Breen won the ‘State of Victoria Strickland Family Women’s Gift’ from the back of the pack in the 120m handicap race, achieving all the goals she’d set for herself and pocketing $2560 in prize money.
‘‘I came to Stawell to execute a few good races and not get too caught up in chasing – when I chase I tend to get a little bit tense’’ Breen said.
The tactic paid off, with the Canberra sprinter concentrating on running her own race. She said she had no idea if she’d won the final, even after she had crossed the line.
‘‘I had to ask the girls and they said I had it, obviously I was ecstatic and very happy with the whole weekend. I know I’m in great shape and coming here my goal was to run under 14 seconds for the 120 off scratch, and I produced that that every time that I ran – in the heats, semi-final and the final’’ an excited Breen said after the race.
