The Australian Sex Party has just achieved the holy grail for minor political outfits – their first parliamentary seat – after leader Fiona Patten won a spot in the Victorian upper house in the recent state election.

Now, flushed with victory, the long-standing Canberran, aided and abetted by another familiar face in the capital, Jorian Gardner, says her party is targeting the territory's 2016 poll in a move that has headline writers salivating.

The Sex Party believes its time has finally come after Ms Patten's win, and missing a second Legislative Council seat by just 235 votes, when the count was finalised on Tuesday.

Ms Patten concedes that "preference whisperer" Glen Druery might have played a role in the breakthrough, stitching up complex preference-flow deals with other minor parties, but she doesn't see anything wrong with that.

"We got elected on the preferences of the Voluntary Euthanasia Party, the Liberal Democrats, the Australian Cycling Party, The Liberal Democrats, the Rock n'Roll Party, The Animal Justice Party, the left over Green vote and the leftover Labor vote," Ms Patten said.

"It's a relatively progressive vote that wasn't counted anywhere else that fell onto us, so in some ways I think that shows a preferential system working.

"We still have a position that Rise-up Australia, DLP and other right-wing parties go behind the majors and that costs us the ability to negotiate with a whole range of parties that may have some numbers."

The party's planners believe that it's a formula that might find fertile ground under the ACT's Hare-Clark voting system which has always had the ability to deliver interesting election results.

"We've certainly been gearing ourselves up for that 2016 election prior to this success in Victoria, now this success certainly buoys us for success in the ACT," Ms Patten said.

"It shows that we've hit that point in our development where people understand our policies and that we're probably one of the very few progressive parties out there and for the ACT, I think, that's going to be very attractive.

"The Hare-Clark system can favour minor parties, especially if they have some profile."

It's hard to pick where the Sex Party sit on the political spectrum, but just don't call them left-wing libertarians.

"Coming from a small business background, we're certainly not coming from a socialist background whatsoever," Ms Patten said.

"But with the changes we're seeing in politics the left-right paradigm is disapperaing, things are becoming much less one-dimensional.

"Although obviously we're very progressive on issues such as voluntary euthanasia, censorship etc."

And it's not just all about the sex.

"We have a far broader range of polices covering far broader range of issues," the leader said.

"In fact, sadly, some people now say there's not enough sex in our policies."
