Experienced and licensed Canberra builder Andrew Laird called the ACT government asbestos hotline a few weeks ago to ask for a list of houses known to contain Mr Fluffy asbestos. He was told the list was unavailable "due to privacy reasons".

But this is an unsatisfactory outcome for a man who potentially risks his life every time he cuts into a gyprock wall to start a renovation.
Just one breath containing a minute particle of amosite asbestos has the potential to kill.
Just last week, the most recent freedom of information request by The Canberra Times to obtain the list of 1050 affected houses was rejected.
Meanwhile, the union representing tradespeople who find themselves on the frontline of handling deadly amosite asbestos - which alarmingly appears to be left in dangerous quantities in Canberra homes despite the $100 million clean-up program in the late 1980s - is calling on the ACT government to legislate greater public safety requirements for all home owners of Mr Fluffy houses.
The Construction, Forestry, Energy and Mining Union believes tradespeople are dicing with death if they are not able to access mandated and independent information on a home's asbestos history. Mr Laird could not agree more.
"It would appear that we, that is anyone contracted to do renovations, have to start a job, remove wall board, then find loose asbestos in the midst of demolition, rather than check a list they won't publish.
"Plumbers, electricians, renovators big and small, builders carrying out extensions or small job building work like me all need to know which houses have loose fluff asbestos in the wall cavities.
"If the responsibility is with the house owner to inform tradespeople and builders prior to a quote being supplied, how many ways can that go wrong?" he asked.
The union said there was a commercial disadvantage for any builder who attempted to factor in the cost of legal and safe asbestos removal over one who was prepared to break the law by collecting and dumping it.
It was also difficult for builders to raise their health and safety concerns during a quote for a job as "most of them want the work and don't want to come off as whingeing builders wanting to add hundreds or thousands to a job to get asbestos dealt with.
''It just shouldn't be up to the tradespeople to have to deal with this stuff and yet they're the ones carrying the can."
