An elderly man has been hospitalised after a spectacular rescue south of Canberra yesterday. The man broke his leg while bushwalking near Tuross Falls in Wadbilliga National Park before midday.

The Snowy Hydro SouthCare helicopter was called to the scene, where a spokeswoman said the pilot had to land on the edge of the falls after winching down paramedics.
''The area is surrounded by dense bush land, requiring our crew to be winched down from the helicopter in order to reach the patient in timely fashion,'' she said. The man was later transferred to Canberra Hospital for treatment.
The spokeswoman said the SouthCare crew were preparing for an increase in incidents as summer approached. ''With the arrival of warm weather it is not unusual for the crew to see a spike in missions related to outdoor leisure pursuits,'' she said.
''In the last year the helicopter experienced a 20 per cent increase in missions on the previous year, totalling 450 missions. On average, the service responds to two missions per day.''
