Firefighters received multiple triple zero calls about the Tatchell Street fire about 5.30pm, and were still on the scene at 9pm after extinguishing the blaze which started in the kitchen.
An Emergency Services Agency spokesman said the roof of the two level house collapsed.
He said paramedics had assessed two patients at the scene. They did not need to be taken to hospital.
"A cat was rescued by the ACT Ambulance Service and taken to a nearby vet for assessment," he said.
Nearby houses were evacuated as a precaution, but there was no damage to neighbouring properties.
An ESA spokesman said the fire was extinguished at about 8.40pm. Fire resources on the site included three fire pumpers, the Bronto Skylift Hydraulic Platform, the hazardous material unit and the breathing apparatus van.
