Adi Narayan, 51, of Forde, was sentenced to five years jail by the ACT Supreme Court in 2013 after he pleaded guilty to the embezzlement.

Narayan had worked as financial controller of Canberra construction company, G.E. Shaw & Associates, when he stole about $987,005.08 between November 2008 and late February 2012.

But Narayan only dishonestly paid about $42,000 of the money directly to himself and his wife.

His preferred method was to pay false invoices to associates or friends.

The recipients would then pay the most of the money back to Narayan, and then keep part of the stolen funds as "commission" for facilitating the fraud.

During the criminal proceedings, the ACT Supreme Court heard Narayan suffered bipolar disorder and had been in the grip of a mania during the entire period.

Voices he heard told him he was a financial genius who had saved the company millions of dollars and that his employer owed him money as a result, the court heard.

In October 2012, a Federal Court froze the assets of Narayan and eight others involved in the scam.

The recipients have already paid back $504,879.39 to G.E Shaw.

But Narayan is yet to return his share of the stolen money and G.E Shaw took action in the Federal Court in an attempt to recover the losses.

The company requested the court order Narayan pay them $981,005.08, plus interest of $292,374.25, and costs.

Narayan accepted the figure was correct, but argued the amount should be set off against $13,260.33 in employee entitlements owed to him.

The court also heard Narayan had paid about $136,000 back to the company.

Justice Lindsay Foster, in calculating the amount owed, said he must be careful not to over-compensate the company.

The judge, in calculating the amount Narayan should repay, took into account the money already recouped from the recipients.

"For all of the above reasons, there will be judgment for the applicant against Mr Narayan for $880,936.78 being the total of the principal sum of $857,005.08 and the amount of prejudgment interest assessed at $23,931.70," the judgement said.

"There will also be an order for costs in favour of the applicant against Mr Narayan."
